Tree Trimming for Raymore Yards

Tree trimming takes off the dead, crossing and low limbs and clears branches back from roofs, drives and walks.

Most calls start with one thing you can see from the yard: a limb scraping the shingles, branches low enough to catch the mower or a truck in the drive, a dead branch hanging over the patio. We fix that, and while we are up in the tree we take out the deadwood before it falls and the limbs that rub against each other.

We prune for the tree as well as the house. Each cut goes just outside the "branch collar", the swollen ring where a limb joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound over. No stubs left sticking out, no bark torn down the trunk, and the brush goes through the chipper before we leave.

Deadwood, Clearance, Thinning and Raising

Every trimming job is a mix of a few standard cuts, picked for what your tree needs and what you need from it.

  • Deadwood removal

Dead and dying limbs come out before they drop on the roof, the car or someone in the yard. It is the cut that heads off the storm call later.

  • Roof and drive clearance

Limbs over the house are cut back off the shingles and gutters, and branches over the drive and walks are lifted so cars and people pass underneath.

  • Crown thinning

Selected branches come out of the inside of the canopy to let light and wind through. It takes weight off long limbs without changing the tree's shape.

  • Crown raising

The lowest limbs come off the trunk so you can mow, walk and park under the tree, and the lawn beneath it gets some sun again.

When to Trim a Tree

Most shade trees are best pruned while they are dormant, and dead or broken limbs come off any time of year.

With the leaves down we can see every limb and how the tree is built, insects and disease are at their quietest around a fresh cut, and the wounds start closing as soon as the tree wakes up in spring. So late fall through winter is when we like to shape a tree, thin it or lift its crown.

A dead branch or a limb a storm has cracked does not wait for winter. It is a hazard now, and taking it off now does the tree no harm.

Why Topping Hurts a Tree

MU Extension advises against topping, which leaves wounds that do not close and regrowth that breaks in storms.

"Topping" means sawing straight across the middle of a tree's limbs to make it shorter, and the MU Extension guide to pruning and care of shade trees explains what it does. The stubs it leaves are too big for the tree to seal, so decay moves in, and the tree answers with a thicket of fast shoots that are only weakly attached and snap off in the next storm.

When a tree has outgrown its spot, we shorten limbs back to a side branch big enough to take over, or thin the crown. If that will not do it, we tell you so on the estimate.

Limbs Near Power Lines

Limbs touching the service line to your house or the power lines along the street are the utility's to clear first, and the rest of the tree is ours.

So call the power company before you call us, and book the trim for after their crew has been. If a storm has brought a limb down onto a line, stay well back from it and from anything it is touching.
