Tracked stump grinder being walked through a narrow side gate between a house and a wooden fence

Stump Grinding and Stump Removal in Raymore, MO

We grind stumps out below the lawn so grass can grow back over the spot, and dig them out when the ground has to be clear for a footing or a new tree.

Free, no-obligation estimates. We quote the whole job before we start.

Stump Grinding in Raymore Lawns

A stump grinder's cutting wheel chews the stump and its surface roots down below the lawn, so grass can grow back over the spot where the tree stood.

The wheel swings back and forth across the stump face, taking it down a little with each pass until the wood is gone below the turf. Then we follow the surface roots that run out under the lawn and grind those down too, so the mower does not catch them next summer.

The machine is small enough to walk through a side gate and across a lawn, so a tree stump in a fenced backyard is as easy to reach as one by the street.

Stump Removal: When Digging Out the Roots Fits Better

Digging out the stump and its root ball suits a spot that will hold a foundation or a new tree in the same place, and it costs more and tears up more ground than grinding.

What most yards need

Stump grinding

The stump and its surface roots are ground below the lawn, and the hole fills with its own grindings.

  • Stump and surface roots ground "below grade"
  • Grindings fill the hole and settle
  • Deep roots left in the ground to rot in place
  • Little disturbance past the stump itself

Fits when grass, a bed or a path is going back over the spot.

Full stump removal

We dig around and under the stump to free the root ball, then lift the whole thing out.

  • Stump and root ball dug out of the ground
  • Hole backfilled with soil rather than grindings
  • More cost than grinding the same stump
  • More torn-up lawn around the hole

Fits when the ground has to be solid and clear of wood all the way down. If you are planting again, the Missouri Department of Conservation tree care guide covers choosing and planting a backyard tree.

From the call to a level lawn

A stump job in a yard is quick once the grinder is on site. Here is how it goes.

  1. You callTell us how many stumps, roughly how big, and how we get to them: a gate, a slope, a fence line.
  2. Free estimateWe come look and quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.
  3. Grinding dayWe show up when we say we will and grind each stump and its surface roots below the lawn.
  4. CleanupThe grindings go back into the hole, and we clean up around it before we leave.

How Far Below the Lawn

We grind every stump below grade, under the level of the surrounding lawn, and we go deeper where something will be planted or built over the spot.

Grass going back over it
Ground below the turf, so the filled hole can be topped with soil and seeded.
A bed or shrubs going in
Ground deeper, so a shovel does not hit wood when you plant.
A footing or a new tree in the same spot
Ground deeper still, or dug out entirely. Tell us the plan on the call and we will say which fits.

The Chips, the Hole and Regrowth

Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil where the stump stood, and that pile is what fills the hole.

  • The grindings are raked back into the hole, mounded a little, and settle as the wood breaks down.
  • Once the spot settles, a layer of topsoil and seed brings the lawn back over it.
  • The deep roots stay in the ground and rot in place, where they do no harm to the lawn.
  • We clean up when the work is done, so what is left is the filled spot and nothing else.

What Stump Grinding Costs

Three things set the price: how big the stump is, how many there are, and how easy the spot is to reach. The free estimate quotes it.

  • The size of the stump across the cut
  • How many stumps we grind on the visit
  • How we reach them: a narrow gate, a slope, a fence or a bed in the way

Digging a stump out costs more than grinding the same stump. Either way, the estimate is free and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Yards and Commercial Lots

We grind single stumps in residential yards and rows of stumps on commercial lots.

A line of stumps along a parking lot or across a cleared lot is the same work as the one stump in a back yard, only more of it. The grinder still takes each stump and its surface roots below grade and leaves the grindings to fill the holes.

Call and tell us about the property, and we will say on the phone whether the job is one we take and come out to quote it. Residential or commercial, the estimate is free and the whole job is quoted before we start.
