Mini excavator bucket levering a stump and its root ball up out of a dug-out hole beside a drive

Stump and Root Removal in Raymore

When a stump has to come out roots and all, for a footing, a patio or a new tree, we dig it out, haul it off and fill the hole.

The estimate is free, and we look at the stump with you before we quote the dig.

Stump removal in Raymore

Stump removal means we dig the stump and its root ball out of your yard where the ground has to be clear, then fill the hole it leaves.

It is the heavier of the two stump jobs. Grinding cuts a stump to chips below the lawn and leaves the roots in the ground to rot. Removal takes the roots out with the stump, so whatever comes next can go in the same spot: a footing, a slab, a bed or another tree.

We dig around the stump, cut the main roots, lever the root ball out, haul it away and backfill. Tell us on the phone what is going in where the stump stands, and we come out, look at it with you and quote the whole job before we dig.

When grinding is not enough

A stump comes out whole where something going into that spot needs the roots gone, not just the stump out of sight.

  • Footings and foundationsAn addition, a deck post or a shed pad cannot sit over roots that rot and settle under it.
  • Patios and drivesRoots left under a slab rot into voids, and the concrete over them cracks and sinks.
  • Replanting in the same spotA new tree needs open soil for its own roots, not the old root ball in the way.
  • Garden bedsA bed gets dug and turned every season, and old roots stop the spade and can send up sprouts.

What sets the price of a stump removal

A dig is priced by the stump and the ground around it: how wide the trunk was, how far the main roots run, how close it sits to a drive, a slab or a fence, whether a machine fits through the gate, and how much soil the hole takes to fill.

We give no figure over the phone, because the stump decides the number. We come out, look at it with you and quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

Free, no-obligation estimates. We answer the phone or call back the same working day.

How a stump and root ball come out

A stump comes out in order, from the marks on the ground to the last rake of fill, and each step is finished before the next one starts.

  1. Mark the lines

Buried utility lines are flagged before anything is dug, so we know what runs near the stump.

  2. Dig around the stump

We take the soil away from the stump to open up the root ball and the main roots running off it.

  3. Cut the main roots

The big roots are cut through at the edge of the dig so the root ball can come free.

  4. Lever out the root ball

The stump and its root ball are levered up out of the hole in one piece and hauled away.

  5. Backfill

The hole is filled with soil and raked level, and we clean up the yard before we leave.

Filling and settling the hole

We backfill the hole with soil, and since fresh fill settles over the following weeks, it gets topped up before seed or sod goes down.

Expect the patch to sink a little after the first few rains. Add soil where it dips, rake it level again, and seed or lay sod once it stops settling. Where a bed or a new tree is going in, the loose fill is ready to plant.

Marking buried lines

Buried lines get marked through the free utility locate a few business days before any digging starts.

A call to Before You Dig sends the utilities out to flag their water, gas, power and cable lines in the yard. Roots can grow close to a buried line, so we set the dig day after the flags are down and dig by the marks.

Grinding is often enough

For a lawn that only needs the stump gone from sight, grinding it below grade costs less and disturbs less ground.
